Lunch: I heated up half the chicken fried steak I had left over from Twin Peaks and ate it with a side salad of fresh herbs.

Dinner: El Chile (918 Congress Ave, Austin, TX‎ - (512) 291-3120‎) which is in the spot that El Chilito belonged to before (last year?). We were hoping for a quick dinner before going to an improv comedy show, so we ordered only a couple dishes.

The salsa they served with chips was different than anything we had ever tasted. It had a lot of flavor going on but didn't taste like it was a chipotle salsa. I asked the waiter and he said it was simply jalapenos, onions, and tomatoes that had been gently roasted over time. We were quite surprised by the simple ingredients and how rich it tasted.

Ceviche de la Casa (large for $8.95) - marinated cubes of tilapia, tomatoes, onions, and cilantro served with house made tortilla chips and avocado slices. Great flavor without being overly sour.

Tacos de Pescado ($10.95) - two tacos filled with grilled fish (very mild flavor - borderline bland) and a flavorful and zesty slaw of cabbage and lime. As long as the taco is eaten with the slaw, it was great. The side of rice and beans were also really well seasoned.

The wall near where we were eaten was adorned with this this awesome painting.

  • It almost looks like an art boutique - do you know if all the paintings there were done by the same artist? It looks like it is, color-wise.

Michael Chu, June 15th, 2009 at 10:13 am:

  • I believe the ones on the right wall were all done by the same artist, but the artist for the Chile (FE DE RICO or Federico) is different. I didn't check the ones on the left wall that were closer to the entrance.
